Becket was named after the 12th century archbishop of Canterbury Cathedral in England, who was murdered on account of a dispute with King Henry II. Just why this name has followed the town is likely to reside in its experimental history: the village church was the first of its kind not to require tax money from the public. This experimental feel continues today in Becket. Whether it’s the number of artists who have made it their home, or the world-renowned Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival all summer long, it’s a hidden town that always has something in store with which to impress the curious visitor.
